‘My bulls–t detector is sounding at full volume’

Re: Liberal minister tells MPs to stop ‘navel-gazing,’ get back to work after Toronto byelection fiasco — Catherine Lévesque, June 26

Immigration Minister Marc Miller, a close friend of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, tells us “whether people are right or wrong, they do blame the government for a number of things that are going on.” The implication being that Canadians may be unfairly blaming Trudeau and the Liberals for the state of our country. Miller goes on to suggest that “Canadians have pretty good bulls–t detectors and they know when they’re being bulls—ted.”

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, who admits that he owes his elevated status to Trudeau, adds that, “clearly some (Canadians) either don’t believe” that Trudeau and the Liberals are there for them “or they don’t see it. … I think we need to do a better job at communicating.” The implication being that the Liberals have it right and it is Canadians who are missing the message.

Trudeau says he is listening to Canadians following the Liberal drubbing in the Toronto-St. Paul’s byelection. Both Miller’s and Guilbeault’s comments suggest otherwise. Both men support Justin Trudeau staying on for obvious reasons of self-interest. The problem is not Canadians. The problem is Justin Trudeau and his Liberal/NDP enablers. The klaxon on my bulls–t detector is sounding at full volume.

Paul Clarry, Aurora, Ont.

If ever there was a more vacuous message to either Liberal MPs or to Canadians it would be difficult to find among the sound-bite verbiage produced by this government. If the Liberal MPs haven’t been working up to this point, what have they been doing beyond adoration of their esteemed leader?

The barrage of content-free utterances of this government is an insult to anyone with the patience to listen to their custom-crafted sloganeering. Not the least of these insults offered by Minister Marc Miller is that the Liberals “have to get back on the horse and fight for Canadians.” Metaphors are great for image creation but what horse are they getting back on in their EV-mandated universe? A portent of future transportation options perhaps?

And who exactly are the Liberals planning to fight? It certainly is not for Canadian Jews who have become cannon fodder for the anti-Israel, mask-wearing extremists taking over the universities and streets. If Miller is the leading cheerleader for the Liberals while their esteemed leader contemplates a retreat to the Canadian tundra now that the damage has been done to the Canadian economy and principles of peace, order and good government, the future of the Liberal party is grim indeed.

Praise for Council of Muslims Against Antisemitism

Re: Not in the name of Islam — Full-page ad, June 22

My sincere thanks to the Council of Muslims Against Antisemitism for the courage they showed in placing a full-page advertisem*nt in the National Post, wherein, among other things, they labelled Hamas as terrorists who “repeatedly invoked the name of Allah and verses from our holy books during the slaughter” of October 7.

Will the Post now be accused of Islamophobia for publishing the ad, and more interestingly, will the Council of Muslims Against Antisemitism be accused of said crime?

Chrystia Freeland’s Hillary Clinton moment

Re: Toronto is fortress Liberal no more — Rahim Mohamed, June 25

During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton referred to people who would vote for Donald Trump and the Republican Party as a “basket of deplorables.”

We now have Chrystia Freeland calling Conservatives (and presumably their supporters) in the riding of Toronto-St. Paul’s “cold and cruel and small.”

That makes me cold and cruel and small — as well as the others in the 42 per cent of voters who voted for the Tories in this week’s byelection.

Thanks to the Deputy PM for this wonderful example of the Liberal party’s Laurentian Elite attitude.

Rick Ryerson, Toronto

Appointment of new human rights boss troubling

Re: New head of Canadian Human Rights Commission investigated over allegations of anti-Israel activity — Ari David Blaff, June 25

The revelation that the new chair of the Canadian Human Rights Commission has been accused of making antisemitic and pro-BDS statements over the years is troubling. Do we not have suitable people who have not shared stages with vicious enemies of Israel, who could be appointed to these very sensitive positions?

Once again, it appears that the Liberal government has got egg on its face entirely of its own making. For shame.

Female assault victims ill-served by sentencing circles

Re: Court defers to ‘sentencing circle’ to cut violent criminal’s jail term — Jamie Sarkonak, June 26

If we removed all references to the heritage of this violent offender from Jamie Sarkonak’s column, the headline would likely have read: “Light sentence given to Nova Scotia man who beat up a woman.” The actions of these sentencing circles and the judges who have given them authority must be labelled for what it is: misogyny. The Victimhood Olympics seems to have one consistent loser — women. This has to stop.

No wonder some Canadian Jews are leaving

Re: Why some Jews are giving up on Canada — Danielle Kubes, June 27

Not much has changed for the Jewish community here in Canada since 1939, when a boatload of German Jews seeking refuge from the Nazis — the MS St. Louis — was turned away from our shores, ultimately leading to the deaths of 254 of those rejected passengers in Nazi concentration camps.

Canadian authorities seem to have allowed the voices of hatred to control how police respond to the vitriol spewing from the mouths of anti-Israel protesters. All levels of government need to get their heads out of the sand and unequivocally support our Jewish community. The police need to step up and protect that community; the Toronto district school board should be disbanded and shuffled off to the dustbin for its blatant anti-Israel bias; and the Montreal police should be overhauled for their cowardly behaviour regarding the encampment at McGill University.

And finally, Justin Trudeau should be truly ashamed of himself as the leader of this once honourable country, but alas, our poor excuse for a prime minister wouldn’t know what shame is.
